1. COACHES RACE FREE
Chasing League athletes around on bikes may not be preparing League coaches
for the Olympics in Bejing. However, it generally provides some pretty
good fitness! To honor our dedicated coaches we are offering free race
entry for the recently announced Lynch Canyon Hill Climb Time Trial. If we
have 20 coaches racing, Matt Fritzinger has promised to race himself. Just
email beth@norcalmtb.org to sign up. Race info is available at
www.norcalmtb.org.

2. GET COMFY WITH NORCAL FOLDING CHAIRS
The League now has an official folding chair, and also a folding stool.
Available in assorted colors, these comfortable seats are $35 and $25.
Perfect for resting the legs at League events.

3. WOMEN'S SHORTS ARE HERE
The new NorCal women's shorts are in, and with stars on the side panel,
they're more stylish than ever – every woman needs a pair. We will be
selling them for $60 at the League merchandise booth. Includes a free pair
of NorCal socks!

4. WIND JACKETS AND WIND VEST SALE
We're blowing out our NorCal wind vests and wind jackets at 25% off already
low prices -- PLUS if you buy any jacket, vest, jersey or shorts at Race
4, you'll get a free pair of NorCal socks!

5. CAFFEINE RULE, ETC.
While we had some fun with our April Fools press release we want to remind
everyone that we are serious about all the League rules. We are very
impressed with how well League athletes have responded to the new rule
book. Thank you all and see you in Fort Ord for another fabulous day of
clean, fun racing.

The NorCal League presents . . .

A brand new race for all ages!

Lynch Canyon Hill Climb Time Trial
Sunday, April 27th, 10:00 AM Start

Canyon Park (near Vallejo), is limited to the first 100 registrants. The

and finishing on nice single-track that includes oak knolls and a rock
garden. From the top, finishers can see (on a clear day) Mt. Diablo, Mt.
Tam and the Sierras as they catch their breath. Proceeds benefit the NorCal
High School Mountain Bike Racing League. Come test your fitness against
some of the League's best riders.

4. WFA-MTB Trainings
5. Timely Readings

1. ANNUAL LEAGUE RETREAT
Mark your calendars! The annual League retreat is scheduled for July 16-20.
Held in the Lake Tahoe area, the retreat always promises great food,
incredible riding, and even better company. Come for the whole time or just
a day. Open to League coaches and close friends. The cost is $30 per night.
Contact katie@norcalmtb.org with questions and to reserve your spot.

2. SUMMER CAMP STAFF
This summer, the League will be offering a host of summer camps and we are
currently looking for coaches who are interested in being staff at one or
more of these camps. Contact Katie@norcalmtb.org if you are interested in
joining the camp crew. Here's what we've got on the burner for camps:

Invitational Tahoe Camp: June 16-20
Berkeley Day Camp: June 23-26
Marin Day Camp: June 30-July 3
Folsom Day Camp: July 7-10
Open Tahoe Invitational Camp: July 20-25

3. CAMPING AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Drake's Head Coach, Paul Choure reports: Of all the venues that offer
nearby camping opportunities. The Boggs State Demonstration Forest is my
favorite. First off, it is the middle of May so the chance of having
beautiful weather is much better. Secondly, the close proximity to the
actual race location combined with the excitement of the State Championship
and the culmination of another season adds to the festive nature of the
campground.

All this said, there are a few things that need to be considered
surrounding a camping outing at Boggs. Camping at Boggs is unlike any other
"campground" . The brochure describes it as "Primitive", meaning that
basically all there is for camp sites is a large open area amongst the
trees. There are no designated camp sites so a good deal of neighborly
tolerance is necessary as camping at Boggs has gotten very popular.

Additionally, there are no toilet facilities aside from those provided by
the League for the race and no water is available in the park. Of course
there is always the RV solution but navigating off the road can be a bit
treacherous but it is doable although accessible level spots are limited.
Please be prepared to haul your own trash back home as disposal containers
are also scarce. So make sure you bring food, water, a table and chairs
and most of all a great attitude and camp out "Primitive" style.

4. WFA-MTB TRAININGS
Our next Wilderness First Aid for Mountain Bikers training is scheduled for
August 23-24, 2008. This course is designed specifically for high school
mountain bike coaches and is essential training if you ride with kids. We
will be requiring this certification for head coaches in the 2009 season
and strongly encouraging all assistant coaches and ride leaders to get it
as well. A second course will be offered January 24-25, 2009. Online
registration will open soon.

5. TIMELY READINGS
Please check out the newest article by our mental health and training
consultant, Marvin Zauderer, titled "Managing your Will to Succeed."
Available at
http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=5798&status=True

Also, as our riders head into the second half of the season, ramp up their
efforts looking to peak, while simultaneously attending to scholastics and
final exams on the near horizon, the dual stresses can make the athlete
more susceptible to illness. Here's a great article on keeping your riders
healthy and managing stress during the season:

other adventurous pursuits, in wilderness areas or if your own insurance
does not cover air transport. While not necessary in relation to NorCal
League activities, we wanted you to know about this highly affordable
resource.

CALSTAR is a nonprofit air ambulance provider serving Northern & Central
California. Their bases are located geographically to serve all communities
– urban and rural. CALSTAR works cooperatively with medical facilities
throughout our service area to transport patients to the most appropriate
facility for their condition. CALSTAR Membership costs $40 for individuals,

Oakland, CA – The NorCal High School Mountain Bike League held it's third
race of the season on March 30th at Grant's Ranch Park in Santa Clara. It
was a day that couldn't decide if it was warm or cold as a steady breeze
brought clouds across the venue valley. The six-mile course started riders
with a long, tough climb right off the get-go that was followed by a
rip-roaring descent that took riders into some mini-rollers before they had
to dig in deep in the grassy start/finish area. Most of the race played out
like a road race for many League riders, as groups of them stuck together,
drafting and pulling as a team. Many races were won in the last lap either
by one racer pulling away on the steep climb, or at the turn into the
finish with a grueling battle of leg strength.

Chris Bennett of El Cerrito High must be taking pointers from his older
brother, as Bennett proved Sunday that he is following closely in his
brothers footsteps by taking first place for the Freshman boys category
(Division I). Division II Freshman boys was dominated once again by Marin
Catholic's Tony Smith and Alex Smith who took first and third,
respectively. Andrew Taylor of Contra Costa split up the Marin Catholic duo
by taking second place. Victoria Yoham (Marin Catholic) and Katherine
Pollard (Roseville) held strong as they both claimed first and second again
(respectively) in the Freshman/Sophomore girls category.

The Sophomore boys took a good beating out there on the course. Brandyn
"Bam Bam" Moulton (Woodcreek) managed to find that last bit of strength it
takes at the end to give him the edge to barely beat out Bart Carrade (San
Rafael) in the Division I category. Moulton had a few words to say about
his nickname after the race. "I look at 'Bam Bam' as someone who works hard
and doesn't worry about anyone else. You just have to worry about your own
person, whether you're in first place or last place." Will Patterson
(Branson) took the win in the last turn of the course as well for the
Division II Sophomore boys. "Oh man, it feels so good. Oh, it hurts too,
but it hurts so good," reported Patterson of the victory.

The JV girls battled it out on the course, with Carolina Gomez-Villafane
(Los Gatos) taking the lead one more time. Keep an eye out next race for
Lauren Catlin (Drake), however, who has been on Gomez-Villafane's heals
since race one, and closed the gap this race to only a mere 36 seconds.
Megali Blanco of Harbor High made it into the top three this race, as well.

The JV boys race was surely a sight to see. The star of the day had to be
Niko Kaplanis of Woodcreek High who not only took first in the Division I
category, but also caught up to and actually passed the lead Varsity boys
group. "I saw the Varsity riders, and noticed my teammate Will, and just
passed them," stated the very humble Kaplanis. Clayton Herrick (San Rafael)
and Riley Howard (Casa Grande) duked it out for second and third place,
respectively. "He got me on that last turn, and then I was like 'alright,
that's cool,'" reported Howard who had his best race yet this season. Ben
Sukys (Contra Costa) stayed in the leaders jersey for Division II as his
attacking strategy led him into a coasting first place. "I started
attacking at the top of the steep hill, and then I couldn't see anyone
behind me anymore," said Sukys.

Christine Weir (Nevada Union) is the unstoppable Varsity girls leader.
Celeste McCartney, big time fan and assistant coach for Berkeley High,
wrapped her arm around Weir's shoulder and stated with humor and truth, "Do
you plan to have a future in cycling?. . . because I hope you remember my
name because you are going to be famous!"

Christine is not the only the rider that rode like the pros out there. The
Varsity boys tactfully stayed together in a large pack all the way until
the final push. It was John Bennett (El Cerrito), however, who attacked on
the last turn to win himself the leaders jersey. Apparently those morning
sprint workouts are paying off for Bennett. Daniel Boyes (Marin Academy)
and Christian Fernandez (Los Gatos) were right on his wheel, coming in only
1 second and 4 seconds (respectively) behind Bennett. Boyes, who had his
best finish yet, reported after the race, "We were all trying our best, but
Tyler Brandt was the most aggressive rider out there today." Fernandez also
had his best race of the year. "Everyone made a move on the last lap. I let
John pass me on the last turn. I want to thank John for leading most of the
race," reported Fernandez of how the race played out.

Team results for Race 3 put two new teams in first place for both
Divisions. The San Rafael Bulldogs pulled to the top to take first in
Division I after amazing race finishes by the team members. The Drake
Pirates held on to second place again, while Los Gatos moved up to take
third. In Division II, Contra Costa Composite proved that they're no force
to be reckoned with as they moved up to first place in team results. The
Calvary Christian team had a season best at second place and Marin Catholic
came in a solid third place.

Some other big news was the performances of Will Curtis and Nate Byrom just
the day before in Fontana, CA. Will and Nate both won as Experts in their
respective age categories (16 and 18) at USA Cycling's first race of the
National Mountain Bike racing in series. After taking care of business
they both drove back up for strong performances at Grant Ranch.

The League is halfway through the race series now. With only three races to
go, anticipation is thick amongst riders, and point competitions remain
tight. Race 4 will be back on the Central Coast in Fort Ord, on a modified
version of Race; with three races under riders' belts it is likely to be a
very different race.

The NorCal High School Mountain Bike League is a non-profit organization
open to students from both public and private schools. The League exists
because of generous donors and sponsors such as Clif Bar, Inc., CamelBak,
Fox Racing Shox, Trek Bicycles, Ritchey Bicycle Components, Creation
Engine, Galaxy Granola, Mike's Bikes, The Pedaler, Paradigm Cycles,
HappyGoFun, REI, Mountain Hardwear, WTB, Tecnu Extreme, Vanderkitten, Whole
Athlete, Maxxis, BTC, Dream Works, and NCNCA. The League provides coaching
and camaraderie to help students achieve both competitive and
non-competitive cross-country mountain biking goals in a safe and enjoyable
manner. Each season includes a Coaches Training Conference, winter riding
camps, the six-race series, and a variety of summer camps. For more
information visit www.norcalmtb.org or call (510) 653-2453.

All essays can be seen at: www.norcalmtb.org/essay_contest.htm

Essay winners, please submit your frame size to Katie@norcalmtb.org!

2. CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL WRITERS & ASPIRING JOURNALISTS
Now that we know what talented writers we have among us, the League wants to tap into that resource and plans to begin publishing an improved newsletter that includes interesting and inspiring articles written by League participants. This would be a great way for students in writing and journalism classes to fulfill requirements at school while providing a service to the League. We are looking for students who could write articles about the mountain bike experience, training, racing, the high school mountain bike community, and more. Interested? Contact nadine@norcalmtb.org.

3. ALSO CALLING PARENTS, TEACHERS, & COACHES WHO LIKE TO WRITE
There is so much great stuff happening within each team and at League events that we'd also like to invite parents, teachers, and coaches to bring some of that to light through writing for the forthcoming League newsletter. Please contact nadine@norcalmtb.org if you have a story you'd like to share.

4. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR WINS AWARD
We want to congratulate Nadine Budbill, our Assistant Director and Camp Manager, for winning Mountain Hardwear's 2007 "Diva & Conquer" Contest. As stated in her nomination, "Nadine is 5'1" of dedicated dynamite. Add insight, humor and a gift for friendship to mountain biker, outdoor adventurer, student, writer, and dedicated educator and you get one inspiring dynamo!" Nadine is currently working hard on our newly expanded winter camp schedule -- the League is very lucky to have her!

blog.mountainhardwear.com/divas/2007/11/what_lights_a_fire.html

5. NEW LIGHT LAW
There is a new state law, in effect January 1, 2008, that requires all cyclists to have lights on their bikes when riding in the dusk or dark. The law states that "every bicycle operated upon any highway during darkness shall be equipped with the following:

1. A lamp emitting a white light which illuminates the highway and is visible from a distance of 300 feet to the front and the sides of the bicycle.*
2. A red reflector mounted on the rear of the bicycle and visible from 500 feet to the rear of the bicycle.
3. A white or yellow reflector mounted on each pedal visible 200 feet to the front and rear of the bicycle and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle, except bicycles which are equipped with reflectorized tires on the front and the rear need not be equipped with side reflectors. All reflectorized tires must meet DMV requirements.

*A lamp or lamp combination, emitting a white light, attached to the operator and visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle, may be used in place of a lamp attached to the bike.

While lights on our pedals will be hard for mountain bikers to comply with we all need to be in compliance with the lights on the front and rear of our bikes/body. In addition, adhesive rim reflectors are extremely effective (and might satisfy the law -- we are checking). Small and affordable front and rear LED lights are easy to leave on the bike at all times in case you get caught by the setting sun, rain, or fog.

6. NORCAL NEIGHBORHOOD MAP
If you didn't find the link to our new interactive map, check it out at:
www.norcalmtb.org/spon/neighborhood.htm

7. FREMONT COMPOSITE TEAM
The Fremont Composite High School Team is in need for a coach in order to continue. The team's founder/coach Nitish Nag has graduated and is now attending UC Berkeley. A coach in the area from Castro Valley to Milpitas on the East Bay would be perfect for this role. Responsibilities would be to lead a weekly ride (either Saturday or Sunday) and attend the League Races. Sponsorship from various cycling companies is already in place for the team, just the coach is needed. Please contact nitish.nag@gmail.com if you can help.

Coaches eNews 1/7/08

Greetings coaches,

The most current coaches' newsletter is now available at norcalmtb.org/teams/coach/coaches_news_1_7_08.pdf

Our 2008 Winter Camps are coming right up and we are in need of significant volunteer power in order to make them happen. We hope that you will be able to volunteer for all or part of one or more camps. Volunteering is a great way to build your teaching skills (especially those of you who attended the skills clinic at the Leaders' Summit) and experience the community-building power of these camps. The camp schedule is as follows:

January 19-20: Level II Co-ed Camp at Camp Tamarancho, Marin County
January 26-27: Girls' Camp at Camp Tamarancho, Marin County
February 2 & 3: Level I Boys' Camps at China Camp State Park, Marin County
February 9: Mixed Level Co-ed Camp at Wilder State Park, Santa Cruz
February 16: Mixed Level Co-ed Camp at Granite Bay State Park, Folsom

Below is a list of the different volunteer positions we need to fill:

-Ride leaders
-Assistant skills instructors
-Registration help
-Mechanical help (bike checks on every kids' bike during camp check-in)
-Gear transportation (for camps at Tamarancho--need a truck or SUV)
-Evening activities supervision and/or overnight duty (overnight camps only)
-Food prep assistant

If you are interested in volunteering contact Nadine Budbill at nadine@norcalmtb.org. Please indicate which camp(s) you are available for and what you would like to do to help out.

Thank you!
