NorCal 1st Team Meeting Handout

2001/2002 BHS CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING TEAM

Now in its fourth year, the BHS mountain bike team is technically a club, but we operate as a team, and the sport of mountain biking is quickly approaching the point where it can achieve official team status. The team rides and trains together for the fun of it and ultimately to gear up for competitive cross-country events we travel to all around Northern California.

The formation of this team makes many things possible: we learn skills more quickly, receive valuable coaching, and drive each other to achieve. We also get sponsorships and discounts, media attention, and can help each other out with the logistics of mountain bike racing – by carpooling to the races for example.

The team is a cross-country mountain bike team, a specific form of cycling which is set apart from road riding, downhill racing, dual slalom, trials, BMX, cyclo-cross, and track racing. Cross-country mountain biking includes the broadest range of skills and members often bring with them backgrounds from the other areas and/or branch out into them with great success. For the greater good of the team and high school racing, this team’s activities are focused upon preparing for and racing at cross-country mountain biking events only.

We hold our highest goal to be providing students that have the desire to mountain bike the coaching and camaraderie that will help them achieve both competitive and non-competitive cross-country goals in a safe and enjoyable manner. The clubs members include absolute beginners to experienced racers ranked high in the nation.

Race Season

The Fall is time for fun riding and getting into good shape, the serious athlete might include some weight lifting. More serious training should take place for all during the winter. We will be racing as a team from March until May. We will target 6 or 7 races as a team this year, including all of the Nor Cal High School Mountain Bike Racing Series.
